Quick answer: Fingers are not all the same size, so one ring size will not fit them all. Taking your ring-finger size as the baseline, a pinky ring is often around 2 US sizes smaller, an index finger is about half to one size larger, and a thumb ring is typically 2 to 3 sizes larger. These are rules of thumb; measure the finger itself for a reliable result.
Why ring size changes from finger to finger
Standard ring size charts, including our own, are built around the ring finger of the left hand, which is the finger people most often size for a wedding or engagement ring. Every other finger has a different width at the base and a different knuckle, so the same ring will fit them differently.
Most people also have one hand that is slightly bigger than the other. The dominant hand is often a little larger, so a ring that fits well on your left hand may feel tight on your right.
Ring size by finger: rough guide
Use this table to estimate, starting from a ring-finger size you already know. Sources disagree on the exact offsets, so these are approximate ranges, not measured averages.
| Finger | Compared with ring finger |
|---|---|
| Ring finger (same hand) | Baseline: your ring-finger size |
| Middle finger | About 0.5 size larger |
| Index finger | About 0.5 to 1 size larger |
| Thumb | About 2 to 3 sizes larger |
| Pinky | About 1 to 3 sizes smaller (often about 2) |
Retail guides do not all agree. For example, one jeweller’s guide to men’s pinky rings states that a pinky is about two US sizes smaller than the ring finger, while noting some people differ by only one size and others by up to three. Read that as “plan on about two, then test it”.
Ring finger
This is the reference finger. If you do not know your size, start with our guide to measuring ring size at home or a ring you already own. Compare your result with the average-size figures in our women’s average ring size guide or the men’s ring size chart.
Index and middle finger
Both usually run a little larger than the ring finger, mainly because of broader knuckles. Statement rings and signet rings are often worn on the index finger, so give the knuckle some thought: the ring has to slide over it, then stay put at the base.
Thumb
The thumb is the biggest finger by some distance, and its base is wide. A thumb ring is commonly 2 to 3 sizes larger than the ring-finger size. Because thumbs flex and have a pronounced joint, a ring that passes the joint easily may spin at the base; a sizing bead or a slightly narrower band can help. Always measure the thumb directly.
Pinky
The pinky is the smallest finger, usually around 1 to 3 sizes smaller than the ring finger. Pinky rings are often worn snug, because a loose ring on a small finger slips off easily. Wider bands need a little more room; see our guide to sizing for wide bands.
How to measure each finger
- Print a ring sizer or use a strip of paper or string (see the printable ring sizer).
- Measure the specific finger the ring will go on, on the same hand.
- Do it at the end of the day when fingers are warm, not first thing in the morning or just after being in the cold.
- Make sure the sizer passes over your knuckle with a little resistance, then pull back to the base without sliding off freely.
- Repeat two or three times and take the average.
Do not borrow your ring-finger size
A ring that fits your ring finger will often be too loose on the pinky and too tight on the thumb. Borrowing a size is fine for a rough budget estimate, but for a ring you are paying for, take the measurement from the actual finger.
Frequently asked questions
What finger size is a thumb ring?
A thumb ring is typically 2 to 3 sizes larger than your ring-finger size, though thumbs vary widely. Measure it directly.
What size is a pinky ring?
Usually about 2 sizes smaller than the ring finger (a range of 1 to 3). Wider bands need a little more room.
Is my index finger bigger than my ring finger?
Often slightly, about half to one size, but many people have equal-sized fingers.
Is the dominant hand bigger?
Often a bit. The difference is usually half a size or less, but it can be more, so size the hand the ring will actually go on.
Can I use my ring-finger size for a middle-finger ring?
Start about half a size up, then check with a sizer.
